Please just enjoy things for once

Hollie wrote about thoughts on whether to continue blogging or not:

I have talked before about the Instagram account I have and don’t use, that I keep to stay connected to a old friends. I could revive that account, post photos and artwork there. There are tons of urban sketchers I’d like to connect with! But I don’t. Every time I go to do that, all I have to do is imagine Meta scooping up every morsel an Instagram user drops, using it to feed their massive AI, and I back away again. It’s just gross.

[..]

AI is everywhere now, scooping up content wherever it can. I don’t think there’s anything particularly special about me or what I write. But in a couple years of daily posts there will be a massive stack of facts and stories, that if read by an AI, will probably produce a more startlingly accurate picture of me than the bots that track my purchases or what news I read. The things I love, the things I fear, what I hope for, what I plan to do, the general state of my mental and physical health. It doesn’t feel comfortable. Is it safe? I honestly don’t know.

I understand the feeling but AI isn’t going anywhere and “Big Tech” already knows a ton about you, and frankly one day you’ll be dead and you’re not going to be concerned about any of this any longer.

So why not just enjoy life? Post to Instagram, connect with people, and stop worrying about what Meta is going to do with the data that they’ve haven’t already been doing for over a decade at this point.

The Indieweb is absolutely stuffed to the gills with posts like this whether it’s on personal blogs or on social media yet people keep posting. It starts to feel very performative. Have people forgotten how to just enjoy things without having to compartmentalize it all into these anti-whatever buckets? Why does it have to be “a form of resistance against the forces of darkness”? Why can’t it just be what it is which is something you enjoy?

I don’t get it.
